ISO 22000 Certification Checklist: Your Roadmap to FSMS Certification
A practical checklist for UK food businesses working towards ISO 22000:2018 certification. Covers every stage from gap analysis through to your certification audit.
Why ISO 22000 matters beyond the certificate on the wall
ISO 22000 is the international standard for food safety management systems. Unlike product-specific schemes, it certifies your entire management system — meaning retailers and buyers trust that your food safety culture is embedded, not just inspected. It is increasingly the minimum requirement for supplying own-label products to UK supermarkets.
Here is what surprises most businesses: the hardest clause is not the HACCP plan or operational controls. It is clause 4 — context of the organisation. You must identify internal and external issues, interested parties, and their needs and expectations. Most first-time applicants fail because their scope statement is too vague or their stakeholder analysis is incomplete. Get clause 4 right and the rest follows.
Using this checklist for your certification project
Follow the checklist sequentially. It maps to the Plan-Do-Check-Act cycle embedded in ISO 22000:2018. Start with your gap analysis against current practices, then build your FSMS documentation, implement operational controls, run internal audits, hold a management review, and finally engage your certification body.
Select a UKAS-accredited certification body — unaccredited certificates are worthless to retailers. The checklist includes a section on choosing the right CB and preparing for the stage 1 and stage 2 audits. Digital SFBB supports your operational PRP evidence, giving auditors instant access to day-to-day food safety records that demonstrate your system is live, not just documented.
