GFSI Audit Checklist: Prepare for Any GFSI-Benchmarked Certification Audit
A universal audit preparation checklist applicable to BRCGS, FSSC 22000, IFS, and SQF schemes. Covers the common elements every GFSI auditor will inspect.
Why GFSI certification is now a commercial necessity
The Global Food Safety Initiative does not certify anyone directly — it benchmarks certification schemes. But every major UK and international retailer now requires suppliers to hold a GFSI-recognised certification. Without BRCGS, FSSC 22000, IFS, or SQF, you simply cannot supply own-label products to Tesco, Sainsbury's, Asda, Morrisons, Waitrose, or Aldi.
The counter-intuitive reality: GFSI auditors spend roughly 40% of their time reviewing documentation, 30% interviewing staff, and only 30% observing operations. The audit is primarily a paperwork exercise with a factory walk attached. Your food safety culture is assessed through employee interviews, not by watching production. A single operator who cannot explain your CCP monitoring procedure can trigger a non-conformance.
Using this checklist across any GFSI scheme
This checklist covers the common core that all GFSI-benchmarked schemes share: senior management commitment, documented food safety and quality management system, HACCP or HARPC plan, prerequisite programmes, traceability and recall procedures, internal audit programme, and corrective action systems. Use it regardless of which specific standard you are pursuing.
Conduct a pre-audit using this checklist at least one month before your certification audit. Pay particular attention to the traceability test — every GFSI audit includes a mass balance exercise. Digital SFBB provides the day-to-day operational records auditors need, including temperature logs, cleaning schedules, and allergen management evidence, in an instantly retrievable format.
