ISO 22000 Internal Audit Checklist: Clause-by-Clause Audit for ISO 22000:2018 Compliance
A comprehensive internal audit checklist structured around ISO 22000:2018 clauses. Designed for UK food businesses conducting their required internal audits of the food safety management system.
Why internal audits make or break your certification
ISO 22000:2018 clause 9.2 requires you to conduct internal audits at planned intervals. Your certification body will review your internal audit programme during every surveillance visit. If your internal audits are superficial, late, or conducted by someone auditing their own work, that is a major non-conformance — it strikes at the heart of your system's integrity.
The counter-intuitive truth: your internal audits should find non-conformances. If every internal audit comes back clean, your auditor knows you are either not looking hard enough or you are recording findings informally to avoid paperwork. A healthy FSMS produces internal audit findings. The auditor wants to see that you find problems and fix them — not that you pretend they do not exist.
Using this checklist for effective internal audits
Schedule audits across the full scope of your FSMS over a 12-month cycle. This checklist follows the clause structure of ISO 22000:2018: context (clause 4), leadership (5), planning (6), support (7), operation (8), performance evaluation (9), and improvement (10). Each clause includes specific questions to ask and evidence to examine.
Rotate auditors. The person responsible for a process cannot audit it — this is a fundamental requirement. Train at least two people in internal auditing. Digital SFBB provides easily retrievable evidence for operational clauses, including PRP verification records that demonstrate your system is functioning day to day.
