Restroom Cleaning Checklist & Log: Customer and Staff Facilities That Pass Inspection
A restroom cleaning checklist and log for UK food businesses. Covers cleaning frequency, consumable checks, and the documented hygiene standards required for FSA and EHO compliance.
Why restroom hygiene matters for your food hygiene rating
Customer and staff toilet facilities are inspected as part of your food hygiene rating assessment under the "Facilities and building" section. Poorly maintained toilets are a direct indicator of overall management attitude towards hygiene — and an EHO will interpret dirty customer toilets as evidence of poor food safety culture, even if your kitchen is spotless.
The counter-intuitive contamination route: the airborne plume from a toilet flush without the lid closed travels up to 1.5 metres and can contaminate nearby surfaces including door handles, soap dispensers, and paper towel dispensers. This is why your cleaning schedule must specify cleaning the dispensers and handles themselves — not just the bowl and seat. E. coli and norovirus are transmitted via the faecal-oral route, and contaminated washroom surfaces are a primary vector.
Using this restroom cleaning log for consistent hygiene standards
Clean and check customer and staff toilets at least every two hours during service, with additional spot checks after busy periods. Each visit must include: toilet bowls and seats, urinals, sinks and taps, mirrors, floors, door handles, light switches, soap dispensers, paper towel dispensers or hand dryers, toilet paper, and waste bins. Refill consumables before they run out — an empty soap dispenser at 8pm is as serious as at 11am.
Record every clean with time, initials, and any issues found. A digital cleaning log timestamps each visit, sends alerts when a scheduled clean is missed, and builds a complete hygiene history. When a customer complains about the toilets and the EHO investigates, you can show a complete record of every clean, every day — not a blank cleaning sheet that was filled in retrospectively.
Restroom cleaning errors that EHO inspectors notice
Cleaning toilets and kitchens with the same equipment. Using the same mop, bucket, or cloths in toilets and food preparation areas is a serious cross-contamination risk. Toilet cleaning equipment must be colour-coded (typically red) and stored separately.
No handwashing signage. Staff toilets must have a clear "Now wash your hands" sign. This is a basic SFBB requirement and one of the first things an EHO checks when inspecting staff facilities.
Cleaning log filled in advance. An EHO can spot a cleaning log that has been completed for future time slots. This destroys your credibility for every other record you present. Never pre-fill cleaning logs.
